Apple Valley, Minnesota - Named by the actions of a local builder?

Located in the southern metro area and bordered in part by Interstate 35E, Apple Valley is in the midst of a development upswing, thanks in part to a burgeoning local economy and its easy access to Minneapolis and St. Paul, both of which are 20 minutes away. Parks and green spaces dot the Dakota County city, which is home to the Minnesota Zoo and in 2013 was named by Money Magazine as the 17th best place to live in the United States.

Apple Valley has a rolling topography that covers nearly 18 square miles. While the main portion of the city lies in a valley created by the surrounding terrain, there remains undeveloped land around the city. The apple portion of the city’s name is said to have come from Orrin Thompson, who began building in the area in 1963 and planted an apple tree at each new home in some of the earliest developments. Though it traces its roots to settlers who came from the East Coast in the mid-1800s, Apple Valley became a city in 1974.

Apple Valley's well-designed growth...

The city’s population has continued to trend upward, from 8,502 in 1970 to 50,330 in 2014. That population makes Apple Valley among the top-20 largest cities in Minnesota. Its population is forecast to continue growing, and an estimated 63,600 residents are expected to occupy the city by 2040. There’s been new construction to accommodate the growth, and the number of permitted single-family detached homes (74 in 2014) was the highest in more than a decade. Multi-family home construction is strong, too, with 297 multifamily units permitted in 2014. Apple Valley features a diverse economy, with retail trade, educational services, and accommodation and food services comprising the majority of employment types. It continues to attract new businesses, and Abdallah Candies has selected Apple Valley as the site for its $12 million retail and manufacturing expansion.

The Metro Red Line connects Apple Valley with the Mall of America in Bloomington, and from there riders can access a light rail system that serves the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, as well as the downtowns of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

As appealing as its location is, though, Apple Valley is a vibrant community unto itself. The main downtown area stretches across a square mile and bustles with energy. You can get your caffeine fix at one of several coffee shops in the city before spending the day at the city’s family aquatic center – which features waterslides and pools for people of all ages – or catching a movie on one of the huge viewing screens at the Great Clips IMAX or Carmike 15 theaters. Venture outside downtown proper and there’s the massive Minnesota Zoo, where grizzly bears roam the Grizzly Coast and penguins stare quizzically at visitors. A blend of big box and locally owned stores are available, but if cooking isn’t your thing, Apple Valley is home to more than 50 restaurants that serve food from around the world. There’s fine dining and active nightlife at the VIVO Kitchen, traditional bar and grill-type restaurants, and indoor and outdoor patios where people connect after work or to simply enjoy dinner and a drink outside. Among the notable offerings is the Crooked Ale Pint House, which features a glass-enclosed patio.

Independent School District 196 serves much of Apple Valley, though some students in its northwester corner live in ISD 191. The city has six elementary schools, three middle schools, three high schools, and a K-8 charter school.
