See New Developments in Blaine

Among the reasons for the city’s growth is its location. It’s just more than 15 miles from Minneapolis, and development of Interstate 35W, U.S. Highway 10 and Minnesota Highway 65 meant an easy commute between the two. Additionally, sand mining allowed for the conversion of peat sod farms for commercial and residential development. Excavated sand was used to level building sites, and the open area was used to create ponds and lakes that give character to the community. Today, the city includes more than 60 parks and 70 miles of trails and sidewalks, ensuring recreational opportunities are never far away. In addition, the city continues to undertake natural area restoration projects, including the 500-acre Blaine Wetland Sanctuary, which will include wetlands, uplands, trails and other natural amenities.

Compared with other cities in the metropolitan area, Blaine experienced relatively slow growth because of its sand- and wetland-rich landscape. Development began on the southern edge of town in the years following World War II, but the city’s population was less than 1,700 in 1950. It grew to nearly 21,000 by 1970, and in 2020 is expected to be just more than 66,000.

Blaine includes four lakes within its city limits, ranging in size from 158 acres to 11 acres. In addition to typical water-based recreational opportunities, there also is a public fishing dock on the 11-acre Loch Ness Lake. But when it comes to recreation, the real draw is the National Sports Center, which is the largest amateur sports facility in the world. The 600-acre facility includes more than 50 athletic fields and an 18-hole golf course called the Victory Links Golf Course.
