The city of Chanhassen, located southwest of Minneapolis in both Carver and Hennepin counties, has been among the leaders in the expansion of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. At once suburban and chock full of the amenities you’d exact in a mid-sized city, Chanhassen also is full of protected lands, sparkling waters and a small-town feel. It rates highly whenever lists of the best places to live are unveiled, and it’s home to the well-known and highly acclaimed Chanhassen Dinner Theatres.

One of the unique aspects of Chanhassen’s population, which is just less than 25,000 people, is the relative youth of the families that call it home. The median age of the city’s residents is just under 40 years old, and more than one-third of the population is under 24 years old. Young families are drawn to the city because of its proximity to Minneapolis and St. Paul – a number of thoroughfares bisect the city, and public transportation connects it to the greater metro area – but also because of its vibrant outdoors scene. Chanhassen, which includes about 14,400 acres, boasts an 885-acre park system (park preserves as well as community and neighborhood parks), 90 miles of sidewalks and trails that connect all points of the city, and a dozen lakes within or partially within the city. There are six public beaches.

The people who’ve lived in the Chanhassen area long have had a strong connection with the land. The earliest records show settlers arrived in the 1850s to begin setting up farms, and later that decade Chanhassen was formalized as a town. As with many other cities that now make up the metropolitan area, Chanhassen’s growth was relatively modest for a century or more. Things picked up steam in the 1960s with development of a mini-mall, and the present-day city of Chanhassen was formed in 1967. Building of the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres in the late 1960s and creation of a redevelopment plan in the late 1970s spurred the city’s growth. The city’s population has exhibited steady growth and is expected to exceed 30,000 by 2020.

There was a building boom in Chanhassen in the early 2000s, when as many as 400 new housing units were permitted each year. While building is no longer occurring at the same frantic pace, development continues to be strong. In recent years, the building of single-family homes (attached and detached) has made up the vast majority of permitted housing units. During each of the past four years, more than 160 new single-family homes have been constructed.
