Located in Carver County and with a population just more than 25,000 people, Chaska traces its roots back hundreds of years. But that heritage remains evident in the city, which includes just fewer than 18 square miles. In the Chaska City Square are mounds built by the Mound Builders, who inhabited the area in the mid-1700s. And one of its neighborhoods – the Jonathan Neighborhood – takes its name from explorer Jonathan Carver, who recorded his 1776 exploration of the area. Chaska was incorporated as a city in 1871. It remained a mostly rural outpost for years, but southwestern expansion arrived in the area by the 1960s and a community transformation began.

Chaska’s population more than doubled between 1990 and 2014, and its growth is expected to continue. Forecasts peg its population in 2040 at 36,600 residents. Chaska has an abundance of multi-family homes that were built in the early 2000s, but more recent development has been decided tilted toward single-family homes. The number of permitted homes to be built has increased each year since 2010; 136 were permitted in 2014. Despite its growth, there remain thousands of acres of agricultural or undeveloped land within the city. In addition, the city includes nearly 2,000 acres of parks, recreational areas, preserves, and the Chaska Town Course, an 18-hole golf course that’s considered one of the top public courses in the metro area.

Despite its growth, Chaska has retained its small-town charm and vibrant sense of community. Among the city’s restaurants is Tommy’s Malt Shop, which pays homage to the important gathering points of previous generations. Today’s community gathering points include the city’s Fireman’s Park, into which the city recently poured $15 million for a new shelter and curling center. The park also includes a swimming beach that ranks highly among the best beaches in the Twin Cities. For the people who want to be able to take a dip in the water whether it’s warm outside or cold, there’s an aquatics center at the city’s community center, which also includes a large gymnasium and fitness area, among other amenities. Fishing is a popular activity in Chaska, too, and anglers have easy access to productive spots on the Minnesota River. In addition, there’s a lake in Chaska – 10-acre Courthouse Lake – that is just behind the Carver County Government Center. The lake once was a clay mine, but today provides excellent fishing for both brown and rainbow trout.
