New Homes for Sale in Cottage Grove, MN

Given its convenient location on the north bank of the Mississippi River, it’s easy to understand why at one time Cottage Grove was the site of the state’s first creameries and a hotbed of wheat production. After all, it was easy to move such commodities via shipping on the river or rail on the lines. And while the city is far more suburban today than it once was, its location is still a big draw. It includes more land adjacent to the Mississippi River than any other city in Minnesota, and the 10-mile commute to St. Paul or Minneapolis is an easy one. It’s also just 15 minutes from the Wisconsin border.

Bordered on three sides by Woodbury (north), Hastings (south), and St. Paul Park (west), Cottage Grove covers more than 37 square miles and for decades has experienced steady growth. According to the 1970 Census, 13,419 people called the city home. That number grew to 30,582 in 2000, and 35,250 in 2014. It’s forecast to have 47,000 people by 2040. Like other suburban cities, Cottage Growth experienced a surge in housing in the early 2000s. That’s since cooled, though the number of single-family detached homes permitted in 2014 – 73 – was the highest since 2008.

Compared with other cities, Cottage Grove has a high proportion of water within its borders – more than 10 percent of the city’s area is water. Much of that is because of the Mississippi River, but there also are other bodies of water. Among them is Ravine Lake, which is located in the 515-acre Cottage Grove Ravine Regional Park. The park, which includes hills and wooded ravines, features cross-country ski trails, fishing opportunities, and picnic shelters with year-round restroom facilities. All told, the city includes more than 2,100 acres of park and recreational land, and nearly 12,000 acres of agricultural and undeveloped land. There are two golf courses in the city.

Cottage Grove is a close-knit place where community events are important. One of the prime examples is the annual Cottage Grove Strawberry Fest, which is a four-day, family friendly event that draws thousands of residents and recalls the days when strawberry fields were one of the main features of the city’s landscape. The festival includes bands, food, fireworks and a parade that feature floats from the city’s many businesses and organizations.
