New Homes for Sale in Eagan, MN

Eagan has come a long way in the time since it was an Irish farming community known as the “Onion Capital of the United States.” Its population has increased, it’s become more connected than ever, and four times it has been named by Money Magazine as among the top 20 places to live in the U.S. It is a dynamic, vibrant city, but one that has taken care to remain true to its roots and its history.

The Eagan Township was established in 1860, and the city takes its name from Patrick Eagan, a native of Ireland who served on Eagan’s first board of supervisors. Farming remained the primary way of life for decades, but that slowly began to change as the metropolitan area grew and the interstate highway system was constructed. The city’s population was 1,185 in 1950 (less than double the number in 1880), but construction of a major housing development – the Cedar Grove Housing Development – set the stage for major growth. The city’s population nearly tripled between 1950 and 1960, and has been growing ever since. Today, Eagan is home to about 67,000 people, making it one of the largest cities in Minnesota.

Located between the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers, Eagan covers more than 21,000 acres. Single-family detached homes make up roughly one-third of the city’s land area, and new single-family homes are permitted each year. In the recent past, much of the new housing is attributed to townhomes and multifamily facilities. Among the keys to Eagan’s success is its careful planning. While it has lovely residential and commercial areas, its wooded areas, rolling hills and lakes and ponds give it a true beauty that sets it apart. The city has nearly 1,300 bodies of water within its borders and has been careful about maintaining high water quality.

There are many ways to spend time in Eagan. It has a wide range of shopping options, from specialty shops to the state’s largest outlet mall – Twin Cities Premium Outlets. Dining options are similarly diverse and, of course, it’s just minutes away from destinations such as the Mall of America and the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Money Magazine also points to the city’s waterpark – Cascade Bay – as among the city’s main draws. And don’t forget about the recreational opportunities the city’s 1,300 acres of parkland and 143 miles of sidewalks and trails provide, too.
