The name Eden Prairie evokes images of a serene, tranquil landscape, but the city now is a far cry from its agricultural beginnings. And that’s not a bad thing. Today, the thriving city of more than 62,000 people is among the most desirable in the Twin Cities and regularly earns a spot on national lists of the best places to live. Current residents agree; a 2014 survey of the city’s residents showed that 95 percent of them rated Eden Prairie’s quality of life as excellent or good, a number that’s on par with surveys going back nearly a decade. The city’s purposeful planning for green space and natural areas is a big reason.

Unparalleled Convenience!

Eden Prairie, which overlooks the Minnesota River valley, covers more than 35 square miles. Residents enjoy easy access to open spaces, parks and trails, which make up about 20 percent of the land within the city. Such spaces harken back to the way it must have been when the town board held its first meeting in 1858. Growth was slow for a century after that – about 2,000 people inhabited it in 1960 – but the development of Flying Cloud Airport, Eden Prairie Center and Interstate 494 brought with it a population surge. Townhomes and other multi-family homes have dominated the city’s housing market in recent years, but permits for single-family homes were higher in 2013 and 2014 than in any year since 2007. Eden Prairie’s population is projected to continue growing at a steady clip.

Not only is Eden Prairie home to Fortune 500 companies, but it also supports an incredibly diverse economy led by manufacturing and retail trade. And access to other suburbs – and Minneapolis itself – is easy, too, thanks to corridors such as Interstate 494 and highways 5, 169 and 212, each of which runs through Eden Prairie. The city also is a Southwest Transit hub and connects riders to numerous points throughout the Twin Cities.

Yet there’s more to Eden Prairie than a great economy and convenient location. The city’s purposeful planning for green space and natural areas is a big reason. Indeed, some of its forested and prairie areas make people forget they’re in a suburban area at all. But look just a bit in the distance and you’ll see Eden Prairie Center, or Bearpath Golf and Country Club, or Winter Park, the headquarters of the Minnesota Vikings. Another of the Twin Cities’ top golf courses – Olympic Hills – also is in Eden Prairie, and people who prefer self-propulsion have more than 120 miles of bike trails to explore. Rather get your exercise inside? Eden Prairie’s state-of-the-art community center features a fitness center, basketball and racquetball courts, and an upgraded aquatics center.

Whatever you seek in a dining experience, you probably can find it in Eden Prairie. The Lions Tap rests just across the road from the Minnesota River and serves some of the best hamburgers in the Twin Cities, while the area right around Eden Prairie Center could keep a food connoisseur busy for days. From fast food at McDonalds to sushi at Kona Grill, fine dining at Wildfire to happy hours on the patio at Old Chicago, Eden Prairie has a vibrant food scene.
