Minnetrista is an affluent community about 25 miles from Minneapolis. Though its population in 2014 was 6,763 residents, it’s an expansive city that covers nearly 32 square miles. Indeed, Minnetrista includes a number of farms, hobby farms and other homes with multi-acre lots. There also is an abundance of water within the city – nearly 20 percent of its surface area is lakes and other waters – which makes sense, given the Native American word for waters is “minne.” (The second portion of the city’s name, “trista,” is Native American word for crooked, and may be the result of the way the land undulates in the area.) Further adding to the city’s natural charm is its nearly 8,000 acres of undeveloped plains and woodlands, and its nearly 1,200 acres of parks and recreational areas.

Compared with other cities in the metropolitan area, Minnetrista has experienced relatively slow growth. Its population in 1970, shortly after it became a statutory city in Minnesota, was 2,878 people. Its population by 2020 is forecasted to be 8,000 people. The development that will allow that growth is under way throughout Minnetrista. The Red Oak of Minnetrista project, for example, would include 61 single-family lots. While the vast majority of homes in Minnetrista are of the single-family variety, 40 townhomes also were permitted in 2014. Some of the proposed developments in the city also contain multifamily housing options. The total number of housing permits issued in Minnetrista in 2014 – 101 – was the highest since 2005.

Minnetrista could see commercial development at some point in the future, particularly along Highway 7 on the city’s southern border. A recent survey of city residents showed interest in building family sit-down restaurants and grocery stores in that area in the future. For now, though, Minnetrista residents rate the city’s rural and natural areas as among their favorite aspects of living there. Nearly 10 percent of residents say their favorite aspect of living there is proximity to lakes. Water-based recreation is popular in the city, particularly on the expansive Lake Minnetonka, for which there are a number of public water accesses. There are several parks situated along lakes, including North and South Cusoke Parks on Saunders Lake, and people who would rather be among the trees may opt for the Woods of Saga Hill Park, which includes a playground and trails that meander through the woods.

Another sign that Minnetrista residents take pride in their community is the extent to which they come together to participate in the events the city offers. More than half of the city’s residents take part each year in Trista Day (a safety education event that includes helicopters and free food such as cotton candy and hot dogs), National Night Out (which promotes community camaraderie and safety) and Clean-Up Days in the spring and fall.
