New Homes in Plymouth, MN

New Homes in Plymouth MN

When you look at a color map of Plymouth, which is located in the center of Hennepin County, three things immediately jump out: The color blue, because the city is home to Medicine Lake, the second-largest lake in the county; the color green, because even as Plymouth has become more developed, the city has placed a premium on its natural areas; and solid lines, because a number of main thoroughfares travel through or along the edges of the city. More than a century ago, Plymouth, which is 12 miles from Minneapolis, was a tourist attraction thanks to the resorts built on the shores of the 925-acre Medicine Lake. While those resorts have faded into history, the city remains a strong draw and today is among the most populous of the Minneapolis and St. Paul suburbs.

As of 2014, the city’s population stood at just fewer than 74,000 people. Its period of greatest growth was between 1970 and 1990, when the population increased from 18,000 to about 51,000 people. While Plymouth’s growth has moderated in recent years, it’s projected to have 83,600 people by 2040. The city’s current residents – as well as those residents to come – relish in its lakes (there are 2.65 square miles of water in Plymouth) and the gently rolling landscape that’s home to one of the premier park systems in the United States. When Money magazine named Plymouth the top city in the nation in which to live in 2008, one of the reasons was its 1,200-acre park system. Voters in Plymouth, which covers more than 35 square miles, twice have approved bond referendums to continue the city’s preservation of green space. The largest parks are the Clifton E. French Regional Park, which is on the north side of Medicine Lake and offers swimming and boating access, and Eagle Lake Regional Park, which is on the south side of Eagle Lake and includes trails for use in both summer and winter. The Eagle Lake park also includes a popular golf center for youth. The nearly 145 miles of trails within the city connect neighborhoods and its picturesque natural areas.

Even as the population surge in Plymouth has slowed, it remains a hotspot for residential development. And the development trend in the city is toward detached single-family homes. There were 291 such homes permitted in 2014, the highest in more than a decade. Whereas the early 2000s saw development of multifamily housing of three units or more, there’s little of that today in Plymouth. Rather, many of the single-family homes are being developed in the city’s northwestern portion as agricultural lands are converted into residential areas. Since 2010, the city has approved dozens of large, sometimes high-end, residential developments. In turn, it also has extended and upgraded roads within the city to handle the increased traffic.

While some of the city’s residential developments have – or will have – neighborhood parks, Plymouth also is planning what’s called the Northwest Greenway, which will run from Lake Camelot on the city’s north side to Wayzata High School on its west side. The Greenway, for which the city has acquired about three-quarters of the necessary land, will be 200 to 300 feet wide and include a 10-foot-wide trail. The Greenway will preserve trees, wetlands and wildlife habitat, and also offer opportunities for biking and walking and connections to other trail systems.

In addition, Plymouth has a thriving economy, about 20 percent of which is in manufacturing. The city has become a hub for the medical-device and health sectors, and the city is home to companies such as Covidien, Medtronic, St. Jude Medical, as well as several hospitals and clinics.
