NEW HOMES IN WACONIA, MN

The city of Waconia is named after the 3,100-acre lake by the same name and upon whose shores the city sits, but make no mistake – Waconia is its own entity. While the lake, which is the second largest in the Twin Cities, is an important and even vital part of the city, there are a variety of reasons it’s been named by the financial website NerdWallet as the top city in Minnesota for young families. It’s at once close to the Twin Cities metro area but maintains a rural feel, has experienced tremendous growth but maintains a strong sense of community.

Learn more about life and new homes in Waconia

Highway 5 is the main thoroughfare that connects Waconia, which is in Carver County, to other suburbs and Minneapolis-St. Paul. The highway also cuts the city into two nearly equal pieces. Highway 284 also runs into Waconia, connecting it to Highway 212 and the southwestern metro area. Such connections have been a key reason why Waconia has undergone the growth it has. In 1990, just fewer than 3,500 people lived in Waconia. The population nearly tripled during the next 20 years, and the city’s population is expected to more than double – to 24,000 residents – by 2040. Waconia has a nice blend of housing options, though construction in recent years has trended heavily toward single-family detached homes. Permits for such homes were higher in each year from 2012 to 2014 than in any year since 2004.

By suburban standards, Waconia is a relatively small town, encompassing just 4.39 square miles. Residential neighborhoods account for just less than half that area, and agricultural and undeveloped land make up about a quarter of it. It has a vibrant downtown area with abundant retail options, and a city hall that’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At one time, the Coney Island area of Lake Waconia featured boathouses, cottages and a hotel, and was a prominent tourism draw. Today, there are three wineries in the area, and dining options abound on the shores of Lake Waconia, giving the city a distinct lake-life feel. Waconia also is home to the Ridgeview Medical Center, which serves the west-metro area.
