New Homes in Woodbury, MN
So what’s so appealing about Woodbury? Start with the nuts and bolts. Thanks to the fact Interstate 94 is one of its borders, and the fact Interstate 494 travels through the northwestern part of the city, access to just about anywhere is easy. That means it’s as simple to get to downtown St. Paul as it is to enjoy the scenic St. Croix River. There also is an abundance of parks – 45 of them – and many are interconnected thanks to more than 100 miles of trails. Three of the most notable parks encircle lakes, providing opportunities for residents to enjoy water-based recreation. And then there’s Woodbury’s community and civic pride, never more evident than during the annual summer Woodbury Days festival, which includes three days of parades, carnivals, music, and booths that showcase the city’s diverse business community.

Located just east of St. Paul and with Interstate 94 serving as its northern border, Woodbury is among the largest and fastest growing cities in the state. It’s the biggest city in Washington County, having grown from about 20,000 residents in 1990 to more than 66,000 today. But within its nearly 36 square miles remains development opportunity, and it’s expected the city will add another 20,000 residents by 2040. But people aren’t flocking to the city just because they can – publications including Family Circle, Money Magazine and Business Week all have given high ranks to Woodbury as a place to live and raise children.
Located on the upland plain between the Mississippi River and St. Croix River valleys, Woodbury historically was a vast woodland before its conversion to agriculture. For 100 years that was the area’s primary use, but the first residential development in 1955 was a harbinger of the change to come. The city today has a nice blend of housing options, though development of townhomes and other multifamily units have cooled, while the city still issues hundreds of permits each year for new detached single-family houses. Among the recently sought residential developments are Summerlin, which will include 100 single-family lots, and Twenty-One Oaks, which will have 14 residential lots.

In addition to providing trails on which its residents can bike and walk, Woodbury also places a premium on providing places where they can be active. The Carver Lake Park, which sits on the city’s western border, includes an off-road cycling trail, archery range, and a swimming beach and picnic area. The city also maintains its own Central Park, a multi-use indoor park meant to serve as a community gathering spot in the heart of the city. But particularly impressive is the Bielenberg Sports Center, which is among the largest multi-use sports centers in Minnesota. It includes a 90,000-square-foot indoor field house, indoor and outdoor skating rinks, 36 athletic fields and a splash pad.
Woodbury includes three thriving retail centers on its north side along Interstate 94 – Tamarack Village, Woodbury Commons, and Woodbury Lakes. Woodbury Commons includes many retail stores and restaurants centered around a central plaza, while Tamarack Village, likewise, is a retail and restaurant center and is designed for easy pedestrian access. Woodbury Lakes is also easy to access and includes seven buildings tied together by courtyard plazas. In addition to outdoor dining venues, there also is a summer outdoor concert series. Additional commercial development could be coming to Woodbury, as a project anchored by Costco has been proposed in the area southwest of the Interstate 94/494 exchange.
